How to select a Franklin solar bore pump

How to use the Franklin Solar Pump Selector

First you need to go to the SolarPak Selector here: https://franklin.config.intelliquip.com/config/franklin/cos/index.jsf

Feel free to click the above link as it will open up a new tab and you won’t have to click back and forth to this page.

You will see the following screen below (fig 1)

The default settings are for Standard US (feet and gallons).  So, if you would like to input metric (metres and litres) click the button at the top right corner that says ‘Standard US’.  The screen will now change to display in Standard Metric.  (See fig 2 below)

Step 1:

Fill in the BASIC OPERATING CONDITIONS (see fig 3 below)

First, input the Total Dynamic Head (TDH).

The TDH is the total of the 3 below:

  • Static Head (how many meters below the ground the pump will be set and how many meters above ground the water will need to go).
  • Pipe Friction Loss (how many litres per minute is travelling through a certain diameter and length of pipe). Use an online pipe friction loss calculator to make life easier. Link to calculator is here: https://www.nationalpump.com.au/calculators/friction-loss-calculator/
  • Discharge Pressure is the pressure required at the end of the line. For example PSI divided by 1.42 = meters head. kPa divided by 9.81 = m head. Solar pumps are really suited for filling tanks only. If the pump is being used to fill a tank only, then the figure for the Discharge Pressure is 0.

Secondly, input the flow needed (in Litres Per Minute or M3/h) or the volume of water needed per day.

 

 

Step 2:

Fill in the SOLAR PANEL CHARACTERISTICS (see fig 4 below)

  • Watts (Wmpp)
  • Volts (Vmpp)
  • Volts (Voc)

Step 3:

Fill in the LOCATION (see fig 5)

Just click on the ‘Lookup’ button and type in your location where it says “Select Your Location”.

A selection of locations will appear.  Choose your location and click the ‘Confirm’ button on the right.

Your latitude and Longitude will automatically appear on the screen.

 

Step 4:

Click the blue ‘SEARCH’ button (see fig 6 below)

For this example, I have input some random details using 315W panel details and my own location.

 

Once the ‘Search’ button is clicked, the search results are displayed. (see fig 7 below)

All the results are clickable.

For this example, I will choose the first option that will give me 26,364 Liters per solar day in my location.  It is the 70SDSP-1.1kw

(see fig 8 below)

 

The next page displays. This page shows pump and array details which are printable and downloadable. (see fig 9 below)

Here you will find an overview with all the information that you need to make your Solar Pump Selection.

Here you will find the pump model, amount of solar panels required and preferred set up.

The ‘Graphs’ tab will display graphs of 1 – Flow in LPM, 2 – Average volume per day through peak solar hours in litres, 3 – Average monthly solar irradiation hours.

The ‘Replacement Parts’ tab will display all the replacement part with their part numbers for the selected model.

The ‘Dimensional Drawings’ tab will display the pump and controller dimensions.

The ‘Specifications’ tab displays the SubDrive Solar Controller Specs, Schematic, Output, PV Header, Operating conditions and minimum generator rating.  You need this info when switching over from generator power.

Clicking on the ‘Selection Criteria’ button on the top left, will take you back to the first page, where you input your TDH, etc.

Clicking on the ‘Search Result’ button text on the top left will take you back to the pump selection page.  Here you can look at the details for a different model pump.
