Automatic tank filling using a float valve

Automatically fill your water tank using a ‘Tank Filling Starter’ with a float valve.

Automatic tank filling using a float valve.  The idea is that the bore pump starts when the water level drops in the tank and the pump stops when the tank is full.

Manual Operation
The pump starts when the water level in the tank drops.  As the water level drops, so does the float. As a result of this, the valve opens which releases the pressure in the pipe.  The pressure sensor monitors this and turns the pump on.
The pump will stop when the water level in the tank is full. When the tank is full, the float rises causing the valve to close.  This produces pressure in the pipeline which the pressure sensor monitors and stops the pump from operating.

Automatic Operation
Tank filling starters have the option of starting at various time signals and stopping when the float valve in the tank rises creating a low flow or high-pressure condition.  Starting times can be set daily to top up tank if required.

The standard ‘Tank Filling Starter’ is housed in a polycarbonate weatherproof enclosure.

What do you need?
When using the ‘Tank Filling Starter’, you will also need a float valve (which I don’t sell), or other type of float switch (such as a double ball valve) and a pressure switch.

Pressure Switch

For this system to operate efficiently, you would need a pressure switch such as the Telemecanique pressure switch.  The pressure switch is wired into the ‘Tank Filling Starter’ box circuitry.

Float Valve

The float valve will be installed in the water tank or water trough.  The double ball float or float valve works on pressure.  When the tank empties, the float releases the pressure in the line which indicates to the pressure switch to turn the pump on.
I have included a video at the bottom of this page that explains in detail how the float valve works.

Pressure Pipe

Poly pipe comes in different pressure ratings. If you are using poly pipe from the bore to the tank, make sure it can handle the required pressure.

The Telemecanique Pressure Switch will monitor the pressure in the pipeline.

Wire the pressure switch into the ‘Tank Filling Starter’ box circuitry.

Manifold kit

When you are installing a pressure tank, pressure gauge or pressure switch on the line a manifold kit will ensure that all the items are correctly spaced. This manifold includes a gate valve that can be used to throttle back or adjust the flow of water from the bore.
