Storm Water Pump Kits Explained

drainage pit with grate used to drain stormwater from yard

How does a Storm Water Pump Kit work?

When it rains and there is too much water to drain off with the natural flow of the land, water can pool and flood.

storm water drainage pump kit to catch rain from a roof downpipestorm water system installedWhen you install a a storm water pit at the lowest point, the water will gravity feed or drain into the pit.

You must install the pit at the lowest point so that the water feeds into the pit.

Stormwater naturally flows into the pit from overland flow, ag drains, roof down-pipes or stormwater pipes.

The pit temporarily holds water during heavy rainfall.

The pit comes with a submersible pump in it. The pump will activate when the pit fills and discharges the water to a suitable drainage point.

This system ensures that water doesn’t sit and accumulate in your yard making a slushy, muddy  mess.

What does the Storm Water Pump Kit consist of?

The kit consists of:

  • Pump
  • Pit
  • Galvanised grate
  • Internal Pipework and check valve

We pre-assemble and pre-plumb at the warehouse, so it’s ready to install.

All you need to do is dig the hole, connect the external pipework and provide power to the pump.

What if I need to drain the storm water more quickly?

The submersible pump in the kit can be changed if you need to drain the water quicker.  On the website, I have only listed the stormwater kits with the smallest pump (RVS155-VF), as it is the most popular pump.
The RVS155-VF has a maximum flow of 155LPM and a maximum head of 7m.

However, larger pumps with higher flows and head capabilities can be installed instead.

Here is a list of some other pumps that can be installed into the kits.

  • RVS250-VF – Maximum flow is 235LPM – Maximum head is 10.5m
  • RVS300-VF – Maximum flow is 300LPM – Maximum head is 10m
  • RVC260 – Maximum flow is 280LPM – Maximum head is 10.5m
  • RVC315 – Maximum flow is 330LPM – Maximum head is 11m

Please Contact Me if you would like a quote for a storm water kit with a different size pump.

We use Vortex pumps in the kits as they can handle a bit of grit, etc.  The kits also come with a galvanised grate to stop leaves and debris from entering the pit. However, I would highly recommend that the pit be clear of leaves and dirt build up every now and then to ensure the pump works efficiently.

What size pits do the Storm Water Pump Kits come in?

The storm water kit pit sizes are:

stormwater kits come in 40l 85l and 180l sizes

  • Capacity 40L (300 sq pit) PIT SIZE L 360 x W 360 x H 450 (mm)
  • Capacity 85L (450 sq pit) PIT SIZE L 560 x W 560 x H 505 (mm)
  • Capacity 180L (600 sq pit) PIT SIZE L 715 x W 715 x H 660 (mm)

150mm risers and 300mm risers are available for the 180L pit.  Max of 2 x 300mm risers.

The 40L kit is handy for compact spaces, the 85L kit is popular for standard residential use and the 180L kit is for higher volume applications.

What if I need a larger Storm Water Pumping System?

Aside from the kits available here, we do custom built systems.  The custom-built pump systems are larger than the kits. They have larger pit sizes and larger pumps.  They can also have alarms, controls, etc.   I have a quote form for the custom-built systems.  The form has a few basic questions to fill out.  Once you submit the form, you will receive a quote with data sheets in a day or two.  The quote is obligation free.

What is the Stormwater Kit made of?

The pits are made from Polyethylene and the galvanised steel grate is Class A. They are built for outdoor conditions and long-term use.

Where are Stormwater pump stations mainly used?

In Australia, weather conditions such as heavy rain provide the perfect opportunity for yard flooding.

The kits are designed for backyard conditions and are commonly used in:

  • Low-lying backyard areas
  • Controlled stormwater collection
  • Residential drainage solutions
